The 1st week of third grade!

Welcome Families!
Wow! We can’t believe the summer is over and the beginning of the 2018/2019 school year is beginning! Each week Ms. Kabara and Mrs. Kocourek will send out a weekly blog. The blog will have reminders, important dates to remember, what we did the past week, and what we will be doing the upcoming week. If there are any questions, please feel free to email and we will try to help answer your question the best we can!
My name is Ms. Kabara and this is my 5th year teaching third grade! I love this year because of all the content and how much the children grow! I will be teaching my homeroom class all core subjects, except Math. This summer I finished my master's degree in Literacy so I am excited to teach my passion to all of the third graders. If you have any questions please feel free to email me at any time at kabarac@kaukaunasd.org

I can't wait to help your child learn and grow this year!
My name is Mrs. Kocourek (pronounced Kuh-sir-ek, or Mrs. K works too!) I will be getting married at the end of September! This is my second year teaching third grade at NDLC. I will be teaching my homeroom class all core subjects, except for Reading. I have a minor in Math so I am glad to bring my passion forward. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me at kocourekj@kaukaunasd.org

I can’t wait for our amazing year ahead!

Curriculum

Reading: This first week of reading we will begin to build our reading lives. We will explore our classroom library and then set some goals to make our reading life the best it can be. During the independent reading time, this week students will be taking an independent reading assessment. Students will choose a book provided by me and then they will read it and when they get to a post-it they will stop to answer a question. This will help me gauge where your child is at. Our homework this week will be to read for 15 minutes. This is shorter than normal to build up our stamina.

Math: We’ll be launching math our first week of school. We’ll be setting up our math journals, talking about what math looks like in our classroom, and playing some math games. We will also be discussing the importance of working together as a group, making mistakes, and persevering when a problem or situation gets challenging. We’ll carry these important themes throughout the year!

Writing: This week we will take an on-demand. Students will have 45 minutes to write about a small moment story from their life. We will also kick off our writing by setting resolutions and creating writing Dos and writing Don'ts!

Science/Social Studies: We will use this week to establish routines, build community, and create some 3rd-grade hopes and dreams. Feel free to talk with your child about what their hope and dream is for third grade :)

Fundations: We will not begin fundations/word study this week. Instead, we will use this time for extra activities, assemblies, etc.

Below is the daily schedule that will let you know which “day” rotation we are on. For example, the first day of school, Tuesday, September 4 is a day 1.

Busing/Pick up Information

Important changes and reminders:
  • North Loop (closest to the building) is for 4K and Special Education needs.
  • South Loop (closest to County Road CE) is for Staff Parking and K-4 grade Buses ONLY.
  • Students should report to the playground to line up in the AM and students being picked up will exit to the playground to meet parents/guardians.
  • Visitor parking for parents/guardians needing to “enter the building” is located in the North Loop.
  • The West side of Sullivan Avenue (along the playground) will now be used for HUG & GO drop off.  When entering the HUG & GO zone, please pull forward as far as possible to allow for additional cars. Students exit the vehicle next to the sidewalk. Once you have dropped off your child please exit the HUG & GO area quickly.  No parking or standing.
  • THANK YOU for using CROSSWALKS to cross streets!  Crossing between cars of mid-street is DANGEROUS and we continue to re-teach students to use crosswalks for safety.

Know that you can always contact us with any questions or concerns.

Best,
Courtney Kabara and Jenny Kocourek
